Why am i getting headaches so often?
A headache, has the ability to ruin a good day quite quickly.
It could present itself as mild pressure. Other times it can be a pounding like pain. It could keep returning like an uninvited guest, so often that you might be beginning to wonder what your body is trying to tell you.
Having an occasional headache is common. It is those frequent headaches that deserve attention. When you understand the cause of headaches it can help you manage them, and more importantly know when to seek help.
What is a headache exactly?
A headache, is pain or discomfort in your head, scalp, face, or neck area, it can differ in how it feels from person to person. Some may describe it as: a tight band around the head, throbbing pain, pressure behind the eyes, neck-related pain, or a pain on one side of the head.
There is common cause for frequent headaches.
One of the most common causes of a headache is stress and tension. Stress, can tighten muscles in the neck, jaw, and scalp, which leads to tension headaches.
The signs which accompany this tension headache could be: tight shoulders, jaw clenching, pressure-like pain, and dehydration after busy days.
Not having a decent intake of water daily can trigger headaches quickly. Your sleep, more so lack of it, or quality, can increase headache frequency. The extended amount of screen time from long hours on the phone, computers, or exposure to the bright light of the actual screen may contribute to headaches.
Should you decide to skip meals the too can trigger a headache in some people due to low blood sugar. Too much caffeine, or just suddenly stopping it, can both cause headaches.
Migraine type headaches are more than ‘bad headaches.’ They may include: throbbing pain, nausea, light and or sound sensitivity, and visual disturbances. Sinus or illness can cause headaches. Your blocked sinus, viral infections, or fever may cause head pain.
How can you reduce a headache?
By hydrating and ensuring that you drink water throughout the day. Aim for a consistent time for both sleeping and waking. Try to implement regular screen breaks, lower the brightness, and improve your posture to reduce screen stain. Avoid long lengths lost between meals, if this triggers your headaches.
Managing stress requires some tools. It is helpful to include: walking, stretching, breathing exercises, and short breaks in-between busy days.
Having a headache diary helps to track your frequency of having them. Track things like: time of headache, food eaten, sleep quality, stress levels, menstrual cycle (if relevant), as these can reveal patterns.
However, if based on these patterns you discover that it would be best to see a doctor then get the required medical advice. Especially if you discover that your headaches: are becoming more frequent, are severe or disabling, wake you from sleep, come with vomiting, weakness, confusion, or fainting. If headaches start suddenly and intensely, and do not improve with the usual care. A doctor can assist with possible causes and recommended treatment.
If recurring headaches are affecting your life, an online doctor consultation can be a convenient first step. A doctor will be able to: review your symptoms, identify warning signs, advise treatment, and guide as to whether further testing is required.
Many headaches are manageable once triggers are identified. However repeated headaches should not become your norm. The sooner you identify and or understand the cause, the sooner you feel better.
