When a sore throat stops being ‘normal’.
How to recognise the causes of chronic throat discomfort before it worsens.
A constant sore throat can feel like an unwelcome guest that refuses to leave. It just won’t go away and can be frustrating, uncomfortable, and at times worrying. Many sore throats are caused by short-term viral infections like the common cold and flu. A constant, or recurring sore throat may point to an underlying issue that requires attention. By understanding the possible causes of your sore throat can help you know where either home care is enough, or when it may be time to seek medical advice.
A sore throat by definition refers to the pain, irritation, dryness, or scratchiness like sandpaper in the area of the throat. When swallowing, talking, or eating it may feel worse. Some experience hoarseness, swollen glands, coughing, or a burn sensation. Should find that this sore throat of yours persists for more than one, or two weeks, and keep returning, is a constant sore throat. There are various causes.
There are common causes for a constant sore throat; one of which being a viral infection. Viruses tend to be the most common cause of sore throats. Conditions such as the common cold, influenza, COVID-19, or glandular fever can leave the throat irritated for days, or even weeks. Symptoms accompanying it may include: fever, fatigue, runny nose, body aches, or coughing. In some cases, throat irritation can linger behind like footprints in wet cement. Sometimes the throat simply takes longer to recover than the rest of the body.
Allergies whether seasonal, or environmentally triggered can lead to ongoing throat irritation, turning your throat into a battleground. Dust, pollen, pet dander, mould, or smoke may cause postnasal drip. A postnasal drip is when mucus runs down the back of the throat and causes inflammation. You may notice that with allergies you experience: sneezing, itchy eyes, nasal congestion, or frequent clearing of your throat.
Acid reflux (GERD), occurs when acid in the stomach travels back into the oesophagus and throat. This can irritate the lining of the throat, and create a chronic sore, or burning sensation. Signs of reflux may include: heartburn, a sour taste in the month, a chronic cough, hoarseness, or symptoms worsen at night. Some individuals tend to experience ‘silent reflux’, which is where throat symptoms occur without noticeable heartburn.
Dry indoor air, especially during winter, or when using heaters, or aircon can dry out the throat. Not drinking enough water may also contribute to persistent irritation. People who breathe through their mouths, while sleeping, often wake up with a dry, or sore throat.
Smoking cigarettes, or vaping can continuously irritate the delicate tissues within the throat. Exposure to second-hand smoke may also contribute. Over time, smoking increases the risk of more serious throat and respiratory conditions.
Teachers, singers, coaches, call-centre workers, and people who speak loudly, or frequently may strain their vocal cords.
The strain can cause throat discomfort and hoarseness. Resting the voice and staying hydrated may help reduce irritation.
Repeated infections of the tonsils or throat may cause ongoing pain, swelling, bad breath, or difficulty swallowing.
Bacterial infections such as strep throat can sometimes persist, or recur if not properly treated.
Environmental irritants such as: air pollution, chemicals, cleaning products, and workplace irritants can inflame the throat over time. It is especially common in dusty environments, or industries involving fumes and chemicals.
It may be uncommon, but a persistent sore throat can sometimes be linked to more serious conditions such as: thyroid problems, immune disorders, throat polyps, tumours, or throat cancer. It is more concerning if symptoms include: unexplained weight loss, difficulty swallowing, blood in saliva, persistent hoarseness, a lump in the neck, or ear pain without an ear infection.
How then can one relieve a constant sore throat you may be wondering. Depending on the cause, the following may help: drink plenty of water, gargle with warm, salt water, avoid smoking and vaping, use a humidifier, rest your voice, avoid spicy or acidic foods, if reflux is suspected, treat allergies appropriately, and use throat lozenges or warm drinks. If symptoms end up persisting, medical evaluation may be needed in order to identify the underlying issue.
You should consider speaking to a healthcare professional if: your sore throat lasts more than 1-2 weeks. If you develop difficulty breathing, or swallowing. If you have fevers that recur, swelling in the neck, noticing white patches in the throat, or you experience unexplained weight loss, and persistent hoarseness. You should not ignore persistent symptoms, especially if they are worsening, or affecting day-to-day living.
A constant sore throat is your body’s way of signalling that something may need attention. It can have many different causes, ranging from mild irritation and allergies to reflux or infections. While many cases improve with simple lifestyle changes and supportive care, ongoing symptoms may signal an underlying issue that needs medical attention. Paying attention to accompanying symptoms and triggers can help identify the cause early. If your sore throat is persistent, sever or unusual, an online GP consultation with DirectDoc can help guide the next steps. Treatment, or further investigation can be determined through the consultation. Your throat works hard every single day; helping you: speak, eat, laugh, sing, and connect with the world around you.
